How to choose the right door stop

Door stops prevent damage to the wall, door and skirting board by preventing doors from slamming into walls after being swung open. Some door stops can also hold doors open to allow for traffic to flow in and out of rooms freely. At Kingwaych Experts, we stock a large selection of door stops, also known as door stoppers. These vary in size, design, material and finish. So, which one is right for your door? To choose the right door stop for your door, we recommend thinking about purpose, installation, material and finish.

What is the purpose?

Do you want a door stopper to hold your door open or to keep it from denting the wall behind it? Depending on your desired purpose, you will be able to narrow down your search. If you want to hold doors open, a door wedge will be ideal whilst if you want to restrict how widely a door opens, either a wall mounted door stop or a floor mounted door stop will do the trick.

The type of installation.

Under the door.

Door wedges will not require any installation. These are simple and straightforward wedges that go under the door to restrict movement. This includes preventing doors from swinging shut and holding doors closed by keeping the door in place.

On the wall.

Wall mounted door stops, also known as skirting door stops, are often fitted on skirting boards, usually two inches away from the floor. These can also be installed on the door itself.

On the floor.

As the name suggests, floor mounted door stops or floor door stops are fitted on the floor. These can be placed close to the outside edge of the door when open. To minimise force on the door’s hinges, place the door stop about two-thirds of the way from the hinge.

The right material.

Doorstops can be made of all kinds of materials, from rubber, plastic, metal and even wood. Consider the type of flooring you have, the amount of traffic that goes in and out of rooms, the weight of the door and anything else that could affect the door stop. Then, choose the right material for your needs.

Heavy-duty door stops

For instance, the Satin Stainless Steel Round Flat Top Floor Mounted Door Stop and the Satin Stainless Steel Heavy Duty Floor Mounted Door Stop would be better suited for commercial spaces and industrial applications. Whilst something less heavy-duty would be best for a home, such as the Matt Black Oval Floor Mounted Door Stop.

Balance function with beauty.

Not only are door stops functional but they are also highly decorative. By finding the right style and finish, you can match your doorstop to the rest of your door furniture and complement the style of your home. There are all kinds of designs, styles and finishes to choose from, including spring door stops, white door stops, square door stops, half-moon door stops… the list goes on.
